Sonata Contest and Student Day Preparation

Hi Parents,

Sonata Contest/Scholarship Contest is only 3 weeks away! March 14 is the big day at UWF. Over 550 students across Pensacola are furiously working on polishing their pieces. Great music is being made! We've got great t-shirts your child will like with their name printed on the back. Those will be on sale during the event as normal. Please help me by being on top of your student these next three weeks. I want them to sound amazing that day because they are such and have been trained to play at such a level. I constantly tell them they don't have to "place" to make me happy. They just are expected to be well prepared and play with excellence. Some are right on track. Some need to get busy. =)

What can you do to help?
1. Get them to pull up their piece on youtube, even if they've already done it. Listen again.
2. Tell them to fix things more they they play. "Playing a piece" is more like a run through. They need to do that as well. They must present the whole package, part of which means no stopping. But at home the need to mostly be fixing trouble spots. That means isolating a problem and working through it 15 times. Reviewing something 3-4 times will do no good. Then go back 8 means and play through the rough spot. Go back to the beginning of the page and play through the rough spot. That is what you should be hearing mostly.

Performance times should be posted very soon. Once they are, I will get those out to you pronto.

Everyone should have received a letter with information about Student Day. It is April 18 at PCA. Many of my students have played at Student Day before. For those who are new, they will get to experience it this year. If your son/daughter has not given you the info sheet, please check their folders. I will be glad to provide another if needed. This is the one event I ask everyone to please participate in. The students love that THEY get to choose their pieces to perform. It's a great end of the year wrap up, in which they can see marked improvements from year to year. Registration is $20 and is due no later than March 1. Please return the permission slip signed with their registration fee.

Everyone will be working on their skills for their level, regardless of whether they attend Student Day or not. So you should be hearing many scales, chords, intervals, arpeggios being played. If not, ask your student to check their "Technique Boxes" or "Technique Pages". Everyone has or will have a theory packet to complete. Could you check up on your student to see if they are doing their pages? These technique pages and theory pages should stay with their music and be brought to each week's lesson.

Thank you for the opportunity to work with your son/daughter. I truly have a fantastic studio of students and parents. Let me know if I can answer any questions for you. Thank you!
