Performances: A group of students will be admitted to the room at the same time and will stay until thegroup is finished. Students may choose to play either piece first. When all the students have performed the room chairman will dismiss you to the hallway and the room auditor will present you with your rating certificate. Questions about ratings should be directed to your teacher at your next lesson.
Families and friends are invited to attend the auditions, and applause is encouraged following
the final piece. It is important that everyone be very quiet during the performances. This is not the place for babies or toddlers who aren’t yet ready to sit still. It is also important to be quiet in the hallway. No recorders, cameras, food, or drinks are allowed in the performance room.
Music: Students must furnish for the judges the original copies of the music they are performing. Students who bring photocopies or fail to furnish an original copy for the judges will be disqualified. Measures must be numbered. The room chairman will ask you for your music and give it to the judges, and return it when the judges are finished. The judges should not know the identity of the student’s teacher. Students or their families should not engage in conversation with the judge at any time. If the judge speaks to the student (s)he should answer, but not pursue a conversation.
Dress: This is a performance, so dress appropriately.
As You Perform: After the Chairman takes your music and introduces you, take your place at the piano or space appropriate for your instrument. Bow or curtsy to the audience. Before the judges tell you to begin, you may warm up, testing the keyboard with a scale or chords, testing the pedal, or tuning your instrument to the piano, if necessary. When the judges indicate that you may begin, perform your first piece. When the piece is finished, wait until the judges tell you to proceed with your second piece. When you have finished your final piece, stand and SMILE, bow or curtsy to the audience, acknowledging their applause, and return to your seat.
